Smirthwaite Ltd is a family business dedicated to the design and manufacture
of high quality furniture and equipment for children and young adults with disabilities.
We also manufacture a comprehensive range of equipment for Conductive Education.
The founder, Geoff Smirthwaite, first became involved with children with 'Special
Needs' in 1976, when he registered the design of the Multi-Variable chair specifically
for children with Cerebral Palsy.
In 1984, he was asked to design some equipment for a seminar on Conductive Education.
It was there that he met some of the UK prime movers of this holistic system of
learning and their encouragement and enthusiasm for the equipment. This, as well
as the opportunity to take early retirement from teaching, enabled him and his
wife Sheila to start a completely new company involved with the needs of disabled
children.
From
this beginning they have continued to be involved with children with seating problems
and the company now manufactures many different chairs to cover all degrees
of disability. The product range is extensive ranging from bathing and toileting to standing and walking equipment. We also manufacture an exclusive range of
mobile and space saving wall mounted changing benches.
In 2003 Smirthwaites acquired the well known Taylor Therapy range of furniture
and equipment. Our products have in some cases been re-designed and improved
and gradually integrated into the product range.
Smirthwaite are acknowledged by our clients for our professional approach
and for the high quality of design, manufacture and finish of our products,
as well as our willingness to design and make 'special' modifications to suit
those with particular needs.
We take part in seating clinics in the UK and also exhibit at NAIDEX and Kidz
up North where staff are available to demonstrate and advise on our products.
We also take part in exhibitions in Europe, Japan and America.
